Abbey Design were commissioned by Royal St Georges Golf Club in Sandwich, Kent to consider ways of modernising the resident PGA Professional’s House set within the heart of their award winning golf course, established in 1887.
The existing 1950’s building lacked sufficient living space and adequate facilities to support modern day living. Although the dwelling had 4 good sized Bedrooms and 2 first floor Bathrooms, the ground floor had only 1 reception room and a small, narrow galley Kitchen. The remainder of the ground floor accommodation comprised of a Dining Room, Home Office and W.C that was accessed directly off the Kitchen area. It was also not possible to enter or view the rear garden, other than through the existing Kitchen.
Abbey Design spent time discussing with the Club Professional and his family their aspirations and requirements, before preparing a scheme to reconfigure and extend the ground floor plan to accommodate a large open plan Living, Kitchen and Dining space, with fully glazed sliding folding doors that lead directly into the rear garden. These doors provide great physical and visual connection to the outdoors, whilst, with the installation of a large roof light, provide an abundance of natural light.
Externally a well-proportioned seating area allows the residents to make the most of inside/outside family living and entertainment.
The architectural style of the new extension is in keeping with that of the existing, matching the materials present within the current building facades.
The final proposals created a home suitable for modern-day living with spaces that are light, airy and laid out to enhance family life.
